The Life of Katharine Hepburn

By Donny Haaver

It was May 12th of 1907 when Katharine Hepburn was born. Her parents had named her Katharina Houghton Hepburn but she changed the final "a" to and "e" as her stage name. She had a very good upbringing seeing as though her mother was a suffragist and her father was a doctor. Today she is considered to be perhaps one of the best actresses of all time.

Her parents were free spirits and because of this Katharine as well as her 5 siblings were able to enjoy the freedom to be themselves while growing up. This of course was very helpful for developing her acting abilities at a young age. However childhood went by quickly and before she knew it, she was attending Bryn Mawr College where she met Ludlow Smith and married him after gradation.

Unfortunately as most things are, her marriage ended in 1934 by divorce. However, it is the experiences in life that made Katharine who she was. During attendance at Bryn Mawr, she also took an active role in the performing arts and even managed to appear in several Maryland productions. Shortly after graduation she moved in to the Broadway scene with her first appearance being in the musical The Big Pond.

While appearing in the musical The Warrior's Husband on Broadway, a talent scout found her and set her up for a screen test. She won the role in the film A Bill of Divorcement that changed her life forever. The following year in 1933, she would take a role in the film Morning Glory (a film that you can still get hold of today at dvd rental - Netflex) for which she would receive an Academy Award for.

Missing the Broadway scene, Katharine made her way back to New York in 1933 to appear in The Lake. Unfortunately this was not taken well by both the critics and the audience. She did not return to movies until 1935 which because of the flopped Broadway musical and her lengthy hiatus, finding a good gig was hard to come by.

All that changed in 1938 with the film The Philadelphia Story which she turned into a musical. She would continue on working between Hollywood and Broadway for most of her life and receive Academy Awards one right after another. She also won the Lifetime Achievement Award as well. Her last film was a guest appearance in 1994 and on June 29th of 2003, Katharine Hepburn would pass a way having lived to be 96 years old.
