Fishing the flats in Florida used to be a frustrating experience for me. For one thing, that crazy Florida weather played havoc with my plans. One minute it's fair, the next minute a thunderstorm has moved in, and has settled down for hours. All I wanted to do was fish the flats in peace.

It looks so easy when my man, Henry Wszczuk, does it, on Fishing the Flats TV. But while I might not be able to take in the more exotic sport fishing available to Henry and his ilk, in spots like Mexico or Costa Rica, I was perfectly content to fish home waters in my native Florida.

Before you knew it, Waszczuk had his own fishing magazine, and he turned years of angling experience into dynamic fishing the flats TV. Any given week, the viewer can watch Waszczuk and crew take on a new adventure. Not very long ago, hockey was right up there with NFL Football, NBA Basketball and Major League Baseball as one of the most popular sports in the US. The other three are still going strong, with the NFL still dominant in the American sports scene.

However, hockey as dropped off the list of major sports. Right now, NASCAR racing is likely more popular with the general public than NHL hockey. Once one of the most important sports in the US, hockey is now seemingly shut out of the top tier looking in.

How did this happen to the NHL? Was it the entire season that was lost to the lockout that did this? No, that wasn't the reason, that lost year to the lockout was actually a symptom of the problem itself. The lockout was held because salaries were getting out of control and many franchises, outside of the most popular ones such as the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings, simply could not afford to keep paying as much to their players as they were.

As any fan who lives in a city with a NHL franchise knows, declining ticket sales aren't the cause of NHL franchises' slumping revenues; games continue to be well attended and eagerly looked forward to. The reason for the lower revenue has to do with broadcast rights, a significant source of income for the NHL. Hockey is simply less popular as a televised sport than it once was.

The lockout however certainly didn't help the situation. When hockey returned the next season they made a deal with the network known as OLN - now Versus - to broadcast their weekly national games. However that cable station reaches only a small fraction of the homes that the major networks reach. This means that hockey simply isn't viewable by a great deal of the population, leaving it in a spot where it can hardly increase its popularity.

There is also the problem that many fans think that hockey is a sport which doesn't lend itself well to the medium of television. Fans prefer to watch hockey games in person; and NHL games are often sold out. However, hockey fans think that some of the speed and the finesse of the sport are lacking in televised games. Sadly, this has led to hockey being harder and harder to watch at all and there are a lot of people who may never know just what they're missing.

While it has slipped from the top four and there are some problems which need to be ironed out to truly convey all of the action and excitement of NHL hockey on TV, if the league can find a new broadcast carrier with a larger market share, it may still be able to return to its former status as one of the most important American sports. In the last several years, it's become extremely common to drink bottled water - it's just easier, some people believe it's better for you, and often restaurants don't provide an alternative. After all, a lot of bottles are used to contain it, and only two out of ten are ever recycled - the rest end up in landfills or on the side of the road.

Recent studies have shown that bottled water doesn't actually taste better nor is it any healthier than regular tap water. In fact, a lot of the big bottled water companies are just bottling city water - Dasani and Aquafina both just use filtered tap water. In fact, lab tests at the University of New Hampshire found that bottled water samples were not any purer than water from a drinking fountain in the middle of New York City - and in a blind taste test, many people who said they didn't like tap water actually ranked it pretty high. Add that to the seventeen million barrels of oil used for making water bottles every year - enough to keep a million cars running for the same period of time - and it's clear why more people are deciding to use reusable water bottles for their hydration needs.

A reusable water bottle can be filled from the tap at home (you can even use your own filter) and transported, and refilled just about everywhere. It's cheaper, too. After all, anybody trying to achieve the mythical eight glasses a day will spend about fifty cents a year for tap water, and closer to fifteen hundred dollars if you decide you want to drink only bottled water. That makes a twenty-dollar water bottle look a lot more affordable! There's shipping, processing, and refrigeration to consider, too. Bottled water requires all of these, adding even more to its carbon footprint, while a bottle you fill up at home has only one manufacturing trail to deal with - recent analysis has shown that the manufacturing process for a one liter water bottle actually consumes a total of five liters of water. Since you can refill a reusable water bottle again and again, it justifies itself quickly.

Don't just rush out and buy the first water bottle you see, however. Reusable water bottles come in a number of different materials and styles, and some are better than others. The most popular materials are plastics (several different kinds), stainless steel, and aluminum. Polycarbonate used to be the leader, but new health concerns over Bisphenol A - a component of this plastic - are leading lots of people to choose other plastics instead. HDPE, or number 2 plastic, is a better choice for people who are concerned about this material, which has already been banned in baby bottles in Canada, and in other products in some other countries. BPA may lead to an elevated risk for heart attacks and diabetes, and is a real worry for some.

Aluminum bottles may also be an issue - some are lined with polycarbonate and remain a BPA risk. Others are not, so you'll need to find out which you're getting when you decide to buy a reusable water bottle. Stainless steel eco friendly water bottles are the most expensive, but they're also the most durable and the least worrisome from a health perspective, so they've been getting a boost. The downside? They're opaque, making it hard to tell how full the bottle is.

No matter which you choose, there's a clear answer when it comes to reusable water bottles versus disposable. Bottled water isn't healthier, less expensive, safer, or easier on the environment, so why choose it? It's far easier to carry eco friendly water bottles and fill up at the nearest tap.

The History Of Reno's Mapes Hotel

On a cold, gray morning in late January 2000, the historic Mapes Hotel in Reno was imploded by 75 pounds of explosives tucked into the art-deco structures support columns. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community and nationally to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts.

While the logic and necessity of demolishing the Mapes is very questionable, one thing that is certain is that the hotel was an important part of Northern Nevada history. The opening of the Mapes in 1947 ushered in a new era in casino gambling, and changed the economy and way of life in Nevada forever. The Mapes was actually the first property in the country to combine a hotel, casino and live entertainment under the same roof. It also became the hotel of choice for celebrities staying in Northern Nevada. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed at The Mapes during the filming of 'The Misfits'. Joseph McCarthy, America's famed anti-Communist crusader, admitted to a reporter over cocktails in the Mapes Lounge that he really didn't have a list of Communists in the US despite his frequent and vitriolic insistence to the contrary.

During the 'Rat Pack' era of the 50's and 60's it became along with the Cal-Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The 11th floor, window walled Sky Room Lounge hosted performances by a roster of entertainment legends including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Louis Prima, Keely Smith, Milton Berle and Mae West. Downtown Reno struggled during the 1960's and 70's but the Mapes continued to prosper. The hotel finally closed in 1982, due to financial problems experienced by the Mapes Family brought about by their other Northern Nevada casino holdings.

While the last twenty years brought an amazing boom in the population and economy of Southern Nevada, the Northern part of the state didn't see much of it at all. For that reason, the urgency of destroying the Mapes is even more questionable. In the Las Vegas area, its easy to justify the demolition of older hotels with simple economics--the older properties simply can't compete in the current mega-resort dominated marketplace. Furthermore, the insane valuation of the land on which they sit makes it financially unfeasible to preserve them as pop culture museums.

This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land"which sits along the banks of the Truckee River"to expand its riverside district of art galleries, restaurants and shops. The revitalization of downtown Reno is definitely needed and a legitimate goal, but at the same time it is hard to think that the Mapes was a barrier to this. Indeed, a number of proposals for redevelopment including office space, artists lofts and upscale senior housing would have probably served to enhance the livability of the downtown area. For whatever reason, the City Redevelopment Authority wouldn't approve any of the proposals and the fate of the Mapes was sealed.

The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. Back in 1996, the city of Reno purchased the hotel and began entertaining proposals for renovation and redevelopment. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which eventually led to the demolition of the structure.

Following the 2000 demolition, the lot remained vacant for over a year until a temporary ice skating rink was hastily constructed the following winter. The property has been improved and the rink is now permanent which, while not in itself a bad use for the land, further calls into question the efficacy of demolishing the structure. It would appear that the city had no clue what to do with the land, but for whatever reason wanted the building brought down. This has led to all sorts of conspiracy theories, from the City Development Agency having financial incentive to raze the hotel to rumors that the building was haunted and was destroyed to keep the Reno area from being overrun with paranormal activity. Whatever the reason for the decision, the city of Reno has lost a beautiful art deco treasure that played a significant part in the economic growth of the state.

Bobby Hull: The Golden Jet

Nicknamed The Golden Jet for his blond hair and his jet-like slap shot, Bobby Hull was the most feared goal scorer of the 60s and 70s He and teammate Stan Mikita were the first NHL players to use curved stick blades, which made his already wicked slapshot even more difficult to stop.

Hull was born and raised on a dairy farm near Belleville, Ontario. By his teenage years it was apparent that he was on a fast track to NHL stardom, and he joined the Chicago Blackhawks not long after his 18th birthday. He would finish second in the leagues rookie of the year balloting in his first season and within a couple of years would become one of the NHLs marquee superstars. By the third year in the league, he was already a fixture at the top of the goal and point scoring charts and would lead the Blackhawks to a Stanley Cup championship in 1961.

In 1966, Hull broke a hallowed NHL scoring mark by becoming the first player to net more than 50 goals in a season. His 51st goal broke the record of 50 goals held by Montreal Canadien greats Bernie Boom Boom Geoffrion and Maurice Rocket Richard. Hull would go on to score 54 goals in the 1966 and would surpass that mark by scoring 58 in 1968.

Hulls tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks ended in 1972, when he jumped to the upstart World Hockey Association (WHA). Hull signed for an at the time unprecedented $1,000,000 signing bonus. Initially, Hulls response that he would jump ship for a million bucks was an offhanded joke but when the WHA ownership agreed to contribute to that sum thinking that it would provide instant credibility for the league it became a reality.

In the WHA, Hull was quickly back to his old tricks. On a line with Swedish superstars Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg called The Hot Line, he led the Jets to two league championship AVCO Cup victories. In 1977, he set a new professional hockey record with 77 goals in a season which surpassed Phil Espositos 1970-71 mark of 76 by a single goal.

Hull suffered from knee trouble throughout his career and was off the ice more than on it during the WHAs final season of 1979-80. After appearing in a handful of games for the Jets, he was shipped to the Hartford Whalers for future considerations. He would play in a few games for the Whalers before calling it a career. With the exception of an abortive comeback attempt with the New York Rangers in 1981 that was the end of his professional hockey career.

Hull's legacy lived on in flesh and blood with his third son, Brett Hull. The Hulls are the only father/son combination to ever score 50 goals in an NHL season and Brett will follow his father into the Hall of Fame this year.

Hull is now 70 years old and splits his time between the Toronto area and Chicago where he serves as a PR ambassador for the Blackhawks organization. He is expected to formally induct his son into the Hall of Fame at the ceremonies later this summer.
