Learn to Dance: The Manly Way to Dancing

By Hal Robbern

Lets face it. Real men don't dance. People tune in to popular dance shows not only to gawk at half-naked women but to mock their seemingly coordination-challenged partners. Dance lessons seem to be wasted on macho, dorky men, squirming complicated dance moves like their life depended on it.

The few who are coordinated, the professional ones - are almost as pitiful. It's a shame that we still live in a world where straight men dancing in tights are sometimes misunderstood. They say real men can't bend like that or learn to dance that. Either that or we get the 'He must be gay' excuse.

And then, there's John Travolta. He's the 'go-to' guy for manly dance moves that leave women speechless. He isn't Michael Jackson but he knows how to 'flow'. 'Saturday Night Fever' made millions of men realize its okay to strut your stuff. If you want that kind of confidence on the dancefloor, here are a few ideas for your own DIY dance lessons:

1. Avoid ballroom dance attire/slicked hair at all costs. Unless you're a professional dancer competing in 'Dancesport', you don't need to look like a salsa dancer to prove you're a dance king. Dress a little finer than usual but make it look effortless.

2. Experiment with your favorite music. Its good to start out with cool Reggae or R & B beats to sharpen your sense of rhythm. Their songs offer a lot of good dance beats that need only minimal body movements (bobbing your head counts). The next step is to learn to dance using your hips. Take a cue from Elvis - he had women swooning with every shake of his hips.

3. Channel your inner James Dean. (Yes, even James Dean had to dance sometime.) Practice your death stare and mysterious smile until you can melt people into a puddle. Slow dancing was practically invented for this dance move.

4. Use simple moves and only pull out the fancy stuff only if you've learned to do them right. Just use your hands to clap or snap your fingers while your hips are moving. Unless you're born with a freakish knack for moving your feet, don't raise expectations too much or you'll risk looking stupid in front of a crowd..

Learning to dance isn't as hard as it looks once you got the look right. Let loose and let the rhythm set the mood. The hippest moves don't count if you're not enjoying yourself! Have fun and you'll be surprised at how women will follow your every move - even off the dancefloor.
