There has been a new influx of online role-playing games for the PC. There are now many free MMORPGs available, as well as pay-to-play MMORPGs. The pay-to-play model allows companies to put massive manpower and resources behind creating some of the best games ever. Here is a list of some of the top MMORPGs out right now.
World of Warcraft - Definitely the top dog when it comes to MMORPGs. World of Warcraft has well over ten million subscribers and continues to grow everyday. This fantasy-based MMORPG broke the mold and has pushed the standard ahead for online role-playing games.
Lord of the Rings Online - Considered to be one of the more popular MMORPGs for casual gamers. Lord of the Rings Online has garnered impressive numbers and reviews after only being out for a few years. There is plenty of solo content and the game has a lot of mainstream appeal.
Eve Online - This MMORPG contains both PvE and PvE, and is in the sci-fi genre. It is well known for its corporate espionage component that often is acted out between in-game guilds but for high, sometimes almost realistic stakes. The game makes extensive use of spaceships and space combat, but also has a land-based portion to it.
Final Fantasy XI - Currently, FFXI is the lone representation in the MMORPG market for the massively successful Final Fantasy series. The game is hugely popular in both Asia and North America. It has released multiple successful expansion packs and still maintains a current and steady player-base, even after being out on the market for several years.
Warhammer Online - The biggest PvP-based game on this list. Warhammer Online failed to debut as highly as it was anticipated, but the game's subscriber base has leveled off and its initial growing pains have subsided. The game wasn't the World of Warcraft "killer" that it was supposed to be, but has still garnered quite a solid reputation and fan support.
City of Heroes / City of Villains - The original superheroes MMORPG. City of Heroes and City of Villains will soon see competition in the superhero RPG market from Champions Online and DC Universe Online. It remains to be seen whether the game will continue to do as well as it has, or fade off into the sunset.
There are many other great MMORPGs that are not listed here. One of the most anticipated games in the industry is currently Star Wars: The Old Republic. It has a tentative release date of late 2010. It will be the first MMORPG will full character speech support integrated into the game. Hopefully, other games in the industry will continue to push the envelope like these great games.
